Common Colds

As pediatric practitioners and MOMs, we get it. There is nothing worse than seeing your kiddo miserable with a runny nose and cough 🤧. In our offices here in Lakeland, this is one of the most common things we see. And every time, the big question is: “Can’t we just do antibiotics?”

Here’s the honest truth: colds are caused by viruses, not bacteria 🦠. Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, so they simply won’t help a regular cold. In fact, using them when they’re not needed can cause tummy troubles, allergic reactions, and even antibiotic resistance — which makes it harder to treat real bacterial infections later on. And as both a pediatrician and a mom, that’s not a risk I want for any child.

So what does help? 💡

Think comfort care. Fluids are huge — water, broth, or electrolyte drinks like Pedialyte to keep them hydrated and thin out mucus 💧. Saline drops and suction for little ones can work wonders. A humidifier in the room can soothe irritated airways (especially with our dry indoor air running during those random chilly central Florida days). Warm compresses can ease congestion. And honestly? Rest. Lots of rest 😴. Their immune system just needs time to do its job.

Now, there are times we absolutely want you to call or come in. High fevers (over 102°F), trouble breathing, bad ear pain, severe headache, wheezing, or signs of dehydration like fewer wet diapers — those are red flags 🚩. Trust your instincts. You know your child best.

At the end of the day, we’re here to guide you — and remember, We’re moms too ❤️. We’ve been up at 2 a.m. with the humidifier humming and a congested little one in our arms. Most colds just need patience, fluids, and love. And if you’re ever unsure, we’re always happy to take a look and reassure you. 💛
