Why does my child get sick during the holidays?

Between cozy gatherings, shared meals, and more time spent indoors with loved ones, germs spread quickly during the holiday season. Kids pass around more than gifts this time of year—being in close contact with relatives and friends and having developing immune systems makes them easy targets for seasonal viruses.

When sickness strikes, we offer priority care for kids because we know how important it is for your child to feel their best—especially during the most meaningful moments of the year.

Cold & Flu Symptoms

Colds or upper respiratory infections (URIs) are common terms we use to describe viral illnesses that cause nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, fever, and cough. The fever usually lasts for 2-3 days, and the cough with congestion and runny nose may last for 5-10 days. Most colds resolve on their own with rest and fluids, but some may lead to ear infection, sinus infection, asthma attack, or other complications. If you are concerned about the possibility of one of these complications, please have your child seen in our office for an evaluation.

Flu symptoms can range from mild to severe and can come on suddenly. Fevers usually last for 3-4 days and are often accompanied by mild to severe body aches and chills. Cough and chest discomfort are also common symptoms with the potential for a stuffy nose and sore throat. If your child experiences fast or difficult breathing, worsening symptoms, or lack of improvement after 2-3 days, please call our office immediately. If the office is closed and these symptoms occur, call our on-call provider for immediate advice on next steps for your child’s care.

Sick Visits & After Hours Care

We want to get your child back to happy and healthy. That’s why we offer same-day appointments whenever possible- to help you and your child receive the in-person care they need to get well soon. If your child is sick and needs to see their doctor, please call our office ahead of time. This will help minimize your wait time.

Sickness doesn’t wait – neither do we. Simply call our main office number any day or time at 863-344-3626 and one of our doctors will return your call within 30 minutes. They will either set up an in-office appointment, recommend an urgent care visit, or redirect you to call emergency services depending on the nature of your child’s sickness.
